ADDU’s University Community Engagement and Advocacy Council organized the ceremony, which honored six awardees who have made a remarkable impact in their respective fields. The Bergoglio Awards 2023 aimed to highlight the exceptional achievements of these individuals and organizations and inspire others to contribute to social justice in their communities.
Coffee for Peace, a social enterprise in Mindanao, received recognition for promoting peace and reconciliation through the coffee industry. The organization has created a platform for coffee farmers from different communities to come together, share their experiences, and build relationships based on mutual respect and understanding. They also offer training on coffee production, marketing, and business management, among other activities that promote sustainable and inclusive economic growth.
Bantay Bukid, a community-based organization in Davao, was honored for its efforts in environmental stewardship and reforestation. They have mobilized and organized local communities to protect and restore the natural resources in their area. The organization has established nurseries and tree plantations, conducted reforestation activities, and implemented various projects to address the challenges of climate change and environmental degradation.
Luna Central Legal Resource Center, a non-governmental organization based in Cagayan de Oro, was recognized for its work in promoting gender equality and human rights. They provide legal aid and assistance to women, children, and marginalized groups who are victims of violence, discrimination, and abuse. The organization has also conducted various capacity-building activities, advocacy campaigns, and community-based programs to empower women and promote gender equality.
Bae Samira Gutoc, a human rights advocate and former senatorial candidate, was honored for her advocacy for good governance and women’s rights. She has been actively promoting women’s rights and empowerment, particularly in conflict-affected areas in Mindanao.
Samahan ng may iba’t ibang Kakayahan sa Dabaw (SAKADAB), a cooperative in Davao, was recognized for its work in promoting wealth creation and its equitable distribution. They have established savings and credit facilities, provided training and technical assistance, and facilitated access to markets and other support services to support small-scale entrepreneurs and promote sustainable economic development.
Finally, Philippinenhilfe, a German-based non-governmental organization, was acknowledged for its altruistic support to the communities served by ADDU. They have been providing various forms of assistance, such as infrastructure development, disaster response, education, and livelihood support, to disadvantaged communities in Mindanao.
In addition to the six awardees, the Bergoglio Awards 2023 also recognized Fr. Joel Tabora SJ as a Tribute Awardee for his exemplary contributions to social justice. As president of ADDU, Fr. Tabora has been instrumental in promoting community engagement and social responsibility among students, faculty, and staff. His dedication and commitment to the common good have inspired many individuals and organizations to take action and contribute to social justice.
