MADAYAW STUDY VISIT
STUDY VISIT IN DAVAO CITY
Madayaw!
Madayaw (a Bisaya word);
In English: good, beautiful, of value.
It is how the people of Davao welcome one another, and it is the same spirit we bring to every program we build with our partners.
The Ateneo de Davao University invites partner institutions to express interest in our new suite of co-facilitated programs. Each program is shaped in close consultation with your faculty to fit your students’ academic focus and your institution’s calendar.
The Madayaw Study Visit is set entirely in Davao City and built around a distinct thematic focus. There is no fixed itinerary handed over at sign-up. Instead, we work with your university before the program begins to shape the schedule, learning objectives, and field activities around your students’ academic background. Your faculty do not simply accompany the group. They participate as co-facilitators alongside ADDU faculty throughout the program, contributing to the learning experience in a substantive and ongoing way.
We warmly invite students and faculty to participate in a specially curated track. As friends in the mission of promoting cross-cultural understanding, this track is designed to deepen your appreciation of Mindanao, particularly the Davao region, and to showcase the beauty and richness it has to offer.
The Three Programs
Choose your thematic focus
Each program draws on Davao City as a living field site, engaging students directly with communities, institutions, and practitioners they would not encounter in a conventional classroom.
All three programs conclude with a Certificate of Completion issued by Ateneo de Davao University. Credit unit recognition can be explored on a bilateral basis with your institution’s academic office.
Thematic Program 1: Sustainable Futures
Students engage in direct dialogue with Bagobo-Klata and Ata Manobo community leaders, elders, and cultural practitioners living and working in Davao City. The program examines how indigenous communities sustain governance, identity, and cultural life in an urban environment, and what responsible cross-cultural engagement looks like in practice.
Focus areas: Indigenous governance, urban cultural sustainability, cross-cultural ethics
Thematic Program 2: Global Health
Students move across Davao’s health system, from tertiary hospitals to barangay health centers to NGO-run community programs. The program addresses questions formal medical training often leaves underdeveloped: how culture shapes the clinical encounter, how psychosocial support functions in post-conflict communities, and how healthcare reaches people at the margins of formal infrastructure.
Focus areas: Cultural competency, psychosocial support, community health systems
Thematic Program 3: Ventures and Values
Based at ADDVentures, ADDU’s Department of Science and Technology (DOST)-recognized Technology Business Incubator on the Jacinto Campus, students engage with live incubated ventures, work through design thinking workshops with a social justice orientation, and examine what entrepreneurship means when the animating mission is the formation of people for others.
Focus areas: Social enterprise, design thinking, technology entrepreneurship,

Working together with your faculty, we finalize the program outline, learning objectives, and field activities. A Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) is signed and preparations begin for your group’s arrival in Davao City.
