Mr. Datu Aljameer B. Salazar, an AB English Language student at Ateneo de Davao University, earned a Gold Honour—the highest distinction—in the International Linguistics Challenge (ILC) 2025, placing him within the top 1% of approximately 1,400 participants worldwide. He scored 28 points in the Final Round and was also conferred the National Award for achieving the highest score in the Philippines, marking a strong performance in a competitive international field.
The International Linguistics Challenge (ILC) is a global competition designed to assess students’ analytical reasoning through the scientific study of language. It emphasizes problem-solving by requiring participants to analyze linguistic data using logic and pattern recognition across areas such as syntax, morphology, phonetics, and semantics. Open to students worldwide, the competition provides a platform for engaging with linguistic structures beyond the classroom.
The competition is structured into three stages: the Qualification Round, the Pre-Final Round, and the Final Round, each progressively increasing in complexity. The Qualification Round introduces participants to foundational linguistic concepts and challenges them to apply systematic thinking and pattern recognition. Successful participants advance to the Pre-Final Round, where problems become more demanding and require deeper analytical engagement.
The Final Round, considered the most decisive phase, covers a broad range of linguistic topics and determines final rankings and awards. Salazar’s performance in this stage secured both his Gold Honour and National Award, reflecting his ability to navigate complex linguistic problems with precision and insight.
For Salazar, the experience has been both fulfilling and motivating. Beyond the recognition, participation in the ILC has encouraged him to further explore linguistics and deepen his understanding of the field.
His achievement not only marks a significant milestone in his academic journey but also highlights the presence of Ateneo de Davao University students in international academic competitions.
