Ateneo de Davao University (ADDU) students recently took part in the inaugural Maritime Silk Road Youth Exchange Camp in China from 18-24 August 2023. With the theme, “Good Times in Fuzhou,” the camp brought together students from diverse countries to support the development of the core area of the 21st century Maritime Silk Road in Fujian. The event aims to strengthen youth exchanges and cooperation among countries along the Maritime Silk Road. During the camp, participants had the chance to delve into Chinese culture and history through museum visits and cultural site tours.

Over 70 students from countries such as the Philippines, Malaysia, Thailand, Myanmar, India, Sri Lanka, Indonesia, Cambodia, and more, gathered to take part in teambuilding activities and enjoy cultural performances and artistic displays. Activities were thoughtfully planned to encourage interaction and establish strong connections among delegates of different nationalities, fostering engaging discussions and meaningful exchanges.

Athe participants were students from ADDU, including Ms. Danica Suzanne G. Lagria, a 3rd year BS Marketing student; Mr. Emmanuel D. Baltazar II, a 4th year BS Entrepreneurship student; and Ms. Justine Kaye B. Lu, a 3rd year AB Communications student. They actively contributed to the activities that facilitated connections with fellow participants from around the world.

Reflecting on her experience, Ms. Danica shared, “The trip to Fuzhou was my first international experience, surprising since China wasn’t my initial choice. Now, I want to return and explore other cities.” She marveled at Fuzhou’s scenic beauty, especially the three hills, pagoda tours, old street visits, and the river cruise trip that captured her attention. She commended the organizers for ensuring they experienced these highlights and appreciated how the trip enriched their understanding of Fuzhou’s history and culture.

Mr. Emmanuel, looking at the experience from an entrepreneurial perspective, said, “As an entrepreneur, this program helped me connect with people from different countries and learn about Fuzhou City’s history and culture.” He highlighted the value of the platform in sharing ideas, building international relationships, and comprehending global business practices. He was impressed by China’s industrial progress and mega factories, noting advanced equipment and digital payments even in rural areas. A visit to an exhibit hall provided insights into Fuzhou’s future economic plans.

Also, he expressed his gratitude to Mr. Jenner Y. Chan, DBM, the Dean of the ADDU School of Business and Governance, the Confucius Institute at ADDU, the Ateneo Filipino-Chinese Community (AFCC), the Chinese Embassy of the Philippines, and his parents for their unwavering support in making this possible.

Ms. Justine expressed her gratitude to the Chinese Embassy and community for welcoming them and granting them opportunities to explore cultural sites, museums, libraries, and historic landmarks. She noted the challenges they overcame, like delayed flights and language barriers, which made their immersive experience even more rewarding. She felt the journey allowed her to deeply appreciate different cultures and traditions, fostering friendships with people from diverse countries.

This educational and immersive event has provided students with the chance to cultivate international relations, contribute to peacebuilding, develop leadership skills, and gain a richer understanding of various nationalities and traditions.
