The Ateneo de Davao University (ADDU) was recognized as an Occupational English Test (OET) Preliminary Preparation Provider at the conference on Advancing Healthcare Communication in the Philippines: OET’s Role in Enabling Collaboration on 28 November 2023 at The Bayleaf Hotel Intramuros, Manila. Joining the gathering is Dr. Benedict Omblero, Director of Ateneo Language Center (ALC), Mr. Mar Gerard Dagaerag of the ALC, and Mr. Jan Joseph Bustamante of the Ateneo Internationalization for Mindanao (AIM) Office.

Participants in the event are OET university partners, hospital partners, test delivery partners, and OET preparation providers.

The OET is an English proficiency test specifically designed for medical practitioners promoting successful healthcare communication in English-speaking environments. The organization has entered partnerships in different countries as collaborators in drafting government policy on the employment of foreign workers, and curriculum development in obtaining a degree in Nursing, among other achievements. OET test takers are perceived as effective communicators on matters that are technical and emotional and use lay language for patients to understand. OET sees that communication is important to make patients informed and empowered.

Filipino nurses, among other medical professionals, are greatly affected when taking OET for professional development, by ensuring purposive communication in Nursing.

The ALC, in partnership with the AIM Office, will soon offer preparation reviews for medical practitioners who wish to take the OET for professional development. ADDU is the first university in the Philippines accredited by the OET as a Preliminary Preparation Provider.

ADDU was also recognized as a recognizing organization in 2020, that sees OET as a form of medical occupation-based language proficiency assessment and as an official admission document of international students who wish to obtain a College or Master’s degree in Nursing in ADDU.
