The Ateneo de Davao University hosts regular visiting researchers from partner universities all around the world. The year began with the School of Arts and Sciences (SAS) hosting two international visiting researchers who are currently in Davao City to do field work for a Mindanao-oriented study.
Prof. Waka Aoyama, Ph.D. from the University of Tokyo is currently hosted by the Social Sciences Cluster as she reviews literature for her current study on “The Life of Clara Saac Arombo,” being written to be published with the Harvard-Yenching Institute.
Dr. Waka has also been hosted by the University before in 2019 and has since published a book from her research during that time, entitled: “An Intimate Journey: Finding Myself Amongst the Sama-Bajau” which cites Ateneo de Davao University as a primary research contributor.

SAS is also hosting an international visiting researcher, Prof. John M. Bassett, from the University of Wisconsin-Madison, USA. Prof. Bassett is a Ph.D. candidate who is currently conducting research in the Philippines for his doctoral dissertation An Economic and Spatial History of Davao City, 1980-2010. The final product of his research will be a roughly 250-page manuscript for an academic audience, which will be submitted to my academic advisors and university for review. This project is concentrated on the economic revival of Davao City since the early 1980s, using a combination of economic and spatial data, archival sources, and interviews.
