Ateneo de Davao University (ADDU)’s School of Engineering and Architecture hosted the First International Association of Jesuit Engineering Schools (IAJES) Asia-Pacific Regional Conference on 01-02 December 2023. With the theme “Purposeful Engineering: Propelling Progress, Pioneering Possibilities,” the conference brought together a vibrant community of students, researchers, and faculty members of different Ateneo engineering schools from across the country, united by a passion for using engineering to create a better world.

The energy throughout the event was palpable, fueled by insightful presentations, lively discussions, and a shared commitment to Jesuit values. Attendees delved into a diverse range of research topics, including engineering and social justice, humanitarian engineering, ethics and spirituality, healthcare, energy, artificial intelligence & humanity, infrastructure, research & academic cooperation, and environment,

IAJES 2023 was more than just a conference; it catalyzed inspiration and action. The event provided a platform for young engineers to learn from established professionals, forge valuable connections, and discover their potential to become agents of positive change. This was evidenced by the inspiring presence of distinguished guests like Fr. Karel S. San Juan, SJ, the ADDU President; Fr. Roberto C. Yap, SJ, Chairperson of the Association of Jesuit Colleges and Universities in Asia Pacific (AJCU-AP); Dr. Rosa Nomen, President of IAJES International; Dr. Rosula SJ Reyes, the Regional Director of IAJES Asia Pacific; Dr. Maricar Casquejo, Regional Director of CHED-XI; and representatives from other Ateneo Engineering Schools.

The two-day conference culminated with a dynamic business meeting led by Dr. Rosula Reyes, where future plans and initiatives for IAJES-Asia Pacific were discussed with passion and commitment. The energy in the room left no doubt that the spirit of IAJES 2023 will continue to resonate throughout the region, paving the way for a future where engineers, guided by Jesuit values, pioneer purposeful solutions for a more just and sustainable world.
