Article by Ms. Denise Cecille R. Armamento, RoboCAO Team Leader

RoboCAO’s journey really began on the farms, where we visited the cacao farmers to learn about the industry, the challenges, and where technology can help. From those conversations, RoboCAO was born. Our passion lies in empowering farmers by introducing innovative solutions to the cacao industry, and it’s heartwarming to know that farmers are also open to this idea.

At the heart of our innovation is the digital fermentation tank, a cutting-edge solution designed to revolutionize the cacao fermentation process. This tank operates through an integrated system of sensors that continuously monitor critical parameters such as pH level, temperature, and humidity. By digitizing these processes, farmers can ensure optimal fermentation conditions, minimizing spoilage and enhancing the quality of cacao beans. The digital fermentation tank utilizes real-time data analytics, allowing farmers to make informed decisions based on up-to-the-minute information. This weather-independent system ensures that fermentation can proceed smoothly, regardless of external conditions. In addition, all data collected can be easily accessed through a user-friendly interface, enabling farmers to track progress. This not only streamlines the fermentation process but also fosters a greater understanding of the factors that influence the flavor and quality of the cacao.

Starting RoboCAO has opened up numerous ideas and opportunities within the agricultural tech space. What began as a conceptual idea has now evolved into a feasible startup. This process has taught us the importance of truly understanding the challenges faced by farmers and how to address them effectively. We came in as engineering students, but through the incubation and with the help of our different mentors and coaches, we’ve learned to find that purpose in our technology, the ‘why’ in our inventions. Participating in competitions has been a transformative experience for us. Presenting our idea across different platforms has provided invaluable exposure and feedback, allowing us to refine our concepts and better understand market dynamics.

The CODEE competition focused on engineering, helping us improve our design and functionality. It was a different experience at the iSpark International Pitching Competition (IIPC) in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia where we brought RoboCAO to a global platform. We learned about the cacao industry in different countries, gaining insight into shared agricultural challenges and the scalability of our product within the global chain. We also met aspiring engineers and inventors from around the world, exchanging ideas and fostering collaboration.

Looking ahead, our goal is to scale RoboCAO’s impact. It’s truly not just a product; it’s a movement aimed at reconnecting us with the farms. We aspire to innovate better technologies and create a revolutionized cacao industry—one pod at a time.

RoboCAO Team Shines at iSpark International Pitching Competition

The RoboCAO Team from Ateneo de Davao University’s Robotics Program has recently achieved remarkable recognition at the iSpark International Pitching Competition (IIPC), held at Tunku Abdul Rahman University of Management and Technology in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, on 20 September 2024. Competing against 87 teams from Thailand, Indonesia, Malaysia, China, and the Philippines, the team secured the Outstanding Science and Technology Innovation Award and earned second place in the final round of the prestigious competition.

Mentored by Engr. Ottoman Montani, Jr., the RoboCAO Team is composed of Mr. John Kyl D. Cortez, Ms. Denise Cecille R. Armamento, Mr. Johann Claude Christian M. Espina, and Ms. Nadine Antonette Obafial.
