Two teams from the Aerospace Engineering Department of Ateneo de Davao University (ADDU) proudly represented the Philippines at the Malaysia Rocket CanSat Competition (MRCC) 2026, held in Perak, Malaysia. Competing under Category 2: 1 km Rocket + CanSat, the AYASIB and JAXCKS rocket teams showcased the technical skills, perseverance, and teamwork of Filipino aerospace engineering students on the international stage.<\/p>\n
The Malaysia Rocket CanSat Competition is an annual rocket competition in Malaysia organized by Planetarium Negara under the Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation (MOSTI), in partnership with HEMREL Malaysia. The competition challenges participating teams to design, develop, and prepare rocket systems capable of carrying a CanSat payload while meeting strict technical and safety requirements.<\/p>\n
Among the Philippine delegates, AYASIB Rocket Team achieved a remarkable milestone by securing 1st Runner-Up in the competition. The achievement reflects the team’s dedication throughout the design, fabrication, testing, and preparation of their rocket system.<\/p>\n
The AYASIB team was composed of Fritzie Mae Maniquez, Aidan Evangelista, Jason Gonzaga, Aemon Colibao, Lenwen Kirk Cacho, and Vincent Jay Paden, with apprentices Alexa Carl Romo, Ian Posia, Paulo Joaquin Evidentes, Miguel Aviles, Earl Sealtiel Maniquez, and Xarisse Pidor contributing to the team’s preparation and rocket development.<\/p>\n
Meanwhile, Team JAXCKS demonstrated resilience in the face of challenges encountered during the competition. The team successfully designed their own rocket, qualified for MRCC 2026, passed the requirements for launch, and successfully mounted their rocket onto the launch rail. Due to weather delays, tight operational schedules, motor misfires, and launch regulations under Malaysia’s Civil Aviation Authority (CAAM), the team was unable to complete an official launch the same with other international competitors.<\/p>\n
Nevertheless, getting a flight-ready rocket through qualification and onto the launch pad represented a significant accomplishment. The JAXCKS core team consisted of Airrah Bea Alam, Marex Magaron, Khiana Andrea Kim Cabalida, Julia Andrei Mapute, Sophia Bianca Ornopia, and Cassandra Michelle Bermudez, supported by apprentices Alfred Glic Legario, Karl Theo Parre\u00f1o, David Joseph Lao, Jiromie Mercado, Mia Tanudtanud, and Simp Ryan Areja.
Guiding both teams throughout their preparation were their advisers, Engr. John Abiel Villanueva, Engr. Ahmed Farjan Abdulcalim, and Wilfredo Pardorla Jr.<\/p>\n
The achievements of AYASIB and JAXCKS highlight not only the technical capabilities of ADDU’s Aerospace Engineering students but also the importance of perseverance, collaboration, and engineering discipline when facing real-world challenges. Their participation in MRCC 2026 marks another step forward in strengthening student involvement in international aerospace and rocketry competitions and in raising the Philippine flag in the global aerospace community.<\/p>\n
