The Ateneo de Davao University (ADDU) joined student leaders from Jesuit institutions across the Asia-Pacific region for the 16th Global Leadership Program (GLP), held from 9-15 August 2026 at Sogang University in Seoul, South Korea.<\/p>\n
With the theme “Global Citizenship,” the program facilitated lectures, cultural exchanges, field visits, and conversations on democracy, peace, technology, and leadership, while asking them to reflect on how global engagement connects with responsibilities at home.<\/p>\n
The ADDU delegation were Ms. Hyacinth Louise R. Duldulao, a fourth-year BS Marketing student, and Mr. Teodore John G. Naraga, a fourth-year BA Political Science student, accompanied by formator and the Coordinator of the Seniors’ Integration Program (SIP) of Arrupe Office of Social Formation, Ms. Precious Kyrie P. Undag. The 2026 program marked ADDU\u2019s second consecutive participation in the GLP after the University first joined the program in 2025.<\/p>\n
Hosted through the Association of Jesuit Colleges and Universities in Asia Pacific (AJCU-AP), the GLP explored global citizenship through three areas: cross-cultural activities and youth, social justice and democracy, and artificial intelligence and higher education. Participants engaged with these themes through university presentations, cultural activities, institutional visits, and field experiences across Seoul and nearby areas.<\/p>\n
At the opening of the program, Fr. Luke Jong-hyeok Sim, SJ, President of Sogang University, invited participants to look beyond travel as the measure of global engagement.<\/p>\n
\n“Global citizenship is not defined by travel, learning foreign languages, or legal status, but by an ethical realization of mutual interdependence,” he said.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n
For the ADDU delegates, that idea became a recurring thread throughout the week. Their experience in Korea was described in the narrative report as “a journey of looking outward while continuously looking homeward, to Davao, to Mindanao, and to the communities that have shaped the kind of leaders we are becoming.”<\/p>\n

Carrying Mindanao into a Regional Conversation<\/strong><\/p>\n
The ADDU delegates introduced the University through their presentation, “Cultivating Global Citizens from the Heart of Mindanao.” Rather than focusing only on institutional information, they highlighted Mindanao\u2019s diversity, ADDU\u2019s Jesuit identity, service, and social engagement, while stressing that global citizenship begins with responsibility to one\u2019s own community.<\/p>\n
Their representation of Mindanao continued during Culture Night, where they shared the creative work of ADDU professor and Mindanawon artist Mr. Norman “Noi” Narciso, whose practice includes creating music through upcycled materials, and invited fellow participants to play Pinoy Henyo. The experience showed how culture can be shared not only through performance but also through art, humor, participation, and everyday encounters.<\/p>\n

Throughout the week, Seoul itself became what the delegates described as an extended classroom. Their visits included the National Assembly of Korea, the National Museum of Korean Contemporary History, Gyeongbokgung Palace, the Demilitarized Zone in Cheorwon, and Sogang University\u2019s AI Pangyo Campus. Each site offered a different way of understanding global citizenship through history, democracy, culture, peace, and technological change.<\/p>\n
Peace, Division, and the Weight of Leadership<\/strong><\/p>\n
The visit to Cheorwon and the Demilitarized Zone (DMZ) became one of the most significant experiences for the ADDU delegates.<\/p>\n
Inside the Second Tunnel and later at the Cheorwon Peace Observatory, the students encountered places where the division of the Korean Peninsula remained physically visible. What had previously been understood through lessons and readings became something they could stand within.<\/p>\n
The experience also led the ADDU delegates to reflect on the human cost of conflict. The encounter naturally turned their thoughts homeward. While the histories of Korea and Mindanao are distinct, the visit reminded them that peace requires sustained dialogue, justice, reconciliation, and memory.<\/p>\n
For Teodore, a Political Science student and young public servant, the DMZ became a particularly personal reflection on leadership. His experience also strengthened the connection between global learning and local governance. As a young leader serving his community in Glan, Sarangani, he reflected that learning from other societies does not mean copying their solutions.<\/p>\n
\n“What matters is not simply importing solutions from elsewhere, but asking what lessons can be responsibly adapted to the realities, needs, and aspirations of the people I serve,” he added.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n
Seeing the World, Then Returning Home<\/strong><\/p>\n
For Hyacinth, the GLP began with the excitement of finally visiting a country whose music, food, and culture she had appreciated for years. Yet the experience became meaningful in an unexpected way: unfamiliar places often made her think more deeply about home.<\/p>\n
Her years in student leadership and volunteer work had already taught her to think about leadership through service and responsibility. The GLP added another dimension.<\/p>\n
\n“Leadership also requires the humility to leave the spaces where I am already comfortable, listen to experiences that are not my own, and allow other people\u2019s realities to reshape the way I understand my own,” she shared.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n
Her reflections were also shaped by simpler moments: sharing meals, meeting fellow delegates, navigating Seoul, laughing during Culture Night, and talking about life and leadership across different countries. These encounters showed her that intercultural understanding can grow through ordinary conversations as much as through formal lectures.<\/p>\n
Her strongest realization came when she thought about what the experience should mean after returning to Davao.<\/p>\n
\n\u201cI did not return wanting simply to say that I had seen more of the world. I returned wanting to serve my own part of it better,” she expressed.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

Innovation Without Losing Human Presence<\/strong><\/p>\n
The GLP also brought participants to Sogang University\u2019s Digital Innovation Campus in Pangyo, where they encountered research laboratories, start-up spaces, industry-academe partnerships, and emerging technologies.<\/p>\n
The visit made discussions on artificial intelligence more concrete, while also raising questions about academic integrity, digital inequality, creativity, ethical judgment, and genuine human interaction. The delegates reflected that responsible AI use requires not only technological skill, but also discernment about how technology serves education and the human person.<\/p>\n
For faculty companion Ms. Precious Kyrie Undag, the experience reinforced the importance of the human dimension of education and leadership. For her, forming leaders in a changing world requires openness to technology while preserving the values that machines cannot manufacture: love, peace, hope, relationships, and a desire for the common good.<\/p>\n

Global Citizenship Begins at Home<\/strong><\/p>\n
The 16th Global Leadership Program exposed the ADDU delegates to another society, new friendships, different institutions, and difficult questions about democracy, conflict, peace, culture, and technology.<\/p>\n
Yet many of their deepest reflections returned to where the journey began: Davao, Mindanao, and the communities they are called to serve.<\/p>\n
\n“Before we can meaningfully engage the world, we must first understand the communities from which we come,” the student delegates shared.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n
For ADDU, the GLP created another opportunity to bring Mindanao into a wider Jesuit and Asia-Pacific conversation. For its delegates, the experience offered a deeper lesson: global citizenship is not measured simply by how far one travels, but by how encounters with the wider world deepen one\u2019s responsibility to the people and places one calls home.<\/p>\n
